Molly Maine is a British illustrator from London, known for her evocative travel and lifestyle illustrations, her bold mark-making and her striking colour palettes. Her work aims to capture fleeting moments of excitement, beauty, and solitude, transporting the viewer to a different place with each piece.
Molly graduated from University College Falmouth in 2008 with a BA Hons in Illustration (including a year at Nagoya University of Arts, Japan), and an MA in Creative Advertising - Art Direction. After graduating, Molly worked for three years at the Illustration Cupboard Gallery in London, curating and marketing illustration exhibitions for artists such as Judith Kerr, Chris Riddell, and Shaun Tan. She then went on to work for five years with Walker Books, marketing picture books for illustrators such as Chris Haughton, Jean Jullien, Oliver Jeffers, Carson Ellis, and Jon Klassen.
In 2016 Molly left her job at Walker Books to begin her journey as a freelance illustrator and designer. She joined the early wave of 'digital nomads' and began travelling the world with her Macbook and sketchbook, setting up her freelance design studio Molly Maine Creative from a small cafe in the Himalayas. Six years later, Molly has travelled to 48 countries and continues to run her studio remotely; her client list includes Penguin Random House, ASOS, Curzon Cinema, Simon & Schuster, and Netflix.
Molly's illustrations are hand-drawn with pencil, black ink, and Japanese brush pens, then rendered digitally using Photoshop and Procreate. Often inspired by her travels, she draws upon a broad bank of visual references and experiences to recreate the feel of each location.
Molly's bold, eye-catching style is perfectly suited to advertising and branding commissions, particularly in the travel and lifestyle sectors. She currently works between Lisbon and London and has clients worldwide.
