Who am I?
Nice to meet you, I’m Molly O’Rourke. I’m a London-based freelance designer. I grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where much of my family still lives. Two of my three sisters and I went to Penn State University where I earned two bachelor degrees: a BSc in Marketing and a BA in Visual Arts.
How long have I been a designer?
I’ve been a designer for 5 years. I started freelancing in 2011 while working for Four Communications in London as a digital and design intern. I then moved back to the U.S. and started as a Junior Designer at Ingenuity Design in Norwalk, Connecticut and was later promoted to Designer. In 2015, I decided to change capacities with Ingenuity and became a freelance resource to allow me to live between the U.S. and the UK. In October 2016, I officially moved back to London as a freelancer and am now excited to continue my career in my favorite city.
How would I describe my design strategy?
I see the role of a designer in three parts: the problem solver, the creator, and the editor. I approach projects first as the problem solver: dissecting the task, understanding the limitations, and planning the solution. My mindset then shifts to creation. I focus on executing the solution with the freedom to explore and discover within the loose boundaries of the task. Lastly, I come back to the work as an editor, removing all elements that don’t add value until it’s in its most efficient and effective form.
