About me
I have a desire to be creative and play with tactile materials. During my studies of a Bachelor of Design I have developed a special affection for designs involving sustainability. I specialize in Graphic and Object design but frequently moonlight in various other fields; ranging from print, photography and styling.

Second Skin My work aims to examine the disconnect between social marketing and the consumer's awareness of how their individual habits impact on climate change. The average working life of a mobile phone is seven years; but with these constant upgrades being introduced to the market Australians, are typically either upgrading or exchanging our phones every 11 months. Manufactures have been encouraging our consumption by creating shorter innovation cycles and planned obsolescence. The objective of my body of work was to see if it was possible to minimise our “throw away” ethos by creating a stronger bond between the object and it’s owner. This lead to the exploration of how people form attachments to the objects that they own. To help form this relationship between consumers and their objects I have attributed human characteristics of skin to Smartphones, this is known as anthropomorphism. Perceiving an object to humanlike can be important, as it depicts whether we will provide care towards an object or if it will become something that can easily be replaced. The body of work is three smartphones covered in a realistic human skin, which represents the phones aging lifespan of approximately 7-10 years. The phone is designed to appear to age over time as it has been found that, “consumers cannot engage deeply with artifacts where there is no growth, no change, no narrative and only predictability” (Chapman, 2005). By creating the skin to “grow” and “age” over time I hope for this to connect the consumer and the product into a long-term relationship. We have now entered an age that that majority of our communication is done via our smartphones; instant messaging, phone calls, and FaceTime. While these technological advances have allowed for around the clock communication, it has also had the flow on effect that the need for physical encounters between one another is now obsolete. By using “skin” in relation to the smartphone, this acts a reminder to the individual that respect should be given to the phone as it does serve as one of our primary connections to other people. By using silicone and hair to create my skin, the aim was to create an object that is simultaneously alien and familiar. The intention of this is to question that if phones are designed with both a mixture of natural (skin) and artificial (phone) could people still upgrade their smartphone yearly without any consideration to the phones life? Or would there now be a sense of affinity due to human likeness? By adding an ever-changing skin to the smartphone I am aiming to transform the smartphone from a certain obsolescence death into a worthwhile investment, which helps us to evaluate our emotional and ethical relationships we have between our objects. This project aims to use speculative design as a medium to stimulate a discussion between designers and the public about the moral implications we would have towards our inanimate objects if they were to “grow with us” over their lifespan. This body of work should allow for a dialogue to begin between the viewers, hopefully, a conversation that will make the viewer re-examine how their consumer behaviours and purchasing habits are having on the environment. I do hope that this work will make the viewer evaluate the emotional and ethical relationships we have with our objects and will hopefully encourage them to hold onto their phone for longer than the average of 11 months.
