About me
Monique Touko is an emerging theatre director. Her training includes being a Truth about Youth associate at Oval House Theatre, Observer Monday's at the Royal Exchange which involved shadowing Ellen McDougall on The Rolling Stone and her relationship with Royal Exchange cultivated into a three month placement through the Regional Theatre Young Directors Scheme. This involved assisting Matthew Xia on Wishlist and its transfer to Royal Court and also assisting Emma Callander from Theatre Uncut on B!RTH festival. She was selected to embark on the Introduction to Directing Course at the Young Vic, led by Sacha Wares and is receiving ongoing mentorship in-house from Gbolahan Obisesan as well as staging Like Yesterday by Jon Brittain in The Clare as part of Fresh Direction, Young Vic Directing Program. Her directing credits include A Number, Animal Farm, Gourds by Chino Odimba at Royal Exchange, The Sting by Suzette Coon at Arcola Theatre and See you at the End by Alexis Boddy at Theatre 503. Monique was an assistant director and administrator for ALT which is an actor’s training program which targets BAME actors from low income backgrounds and provides an alternative to drama school resulting in an industry showcase. She is a freelance facilitator who has worked with Royal Exchange, Royal Court, HighTide and The Challenge to provide workshops for young people and received training from Company Three led by Ned Glasier. In addition, she is a script reader for Talawa Theatre Company and Bruntwood Prize. Monique is part of Leaders of Tomorrow which is a bespoke leadership programme and a collective of theatre practitioners of colour. It involves training from 20 Stories High, Freedom Studios, Talawa Theatre Company and tiata fahodzi. Recent assisting jobs include working with Andrew Twyman on a touring production of Kanye the First by Sam Steiner for the eleventh Hightide Festival and furthermore staging a reading of The Places Where We Lived by Healah Riazi. Monique most recently worked as an assistant director on Yellowman for Nancy Medina at the Young Vic (supported by the Boris Karloff Foundation). Her skill set includes devising, international work, new writing, training actors and working with young people. --------- I’m currently at a point in my career where I'm looking to diversify my skill set and get experience in TV and Film production. In addition, digital marketing, branding and creating online content. I'm part of the Ubunifu Space which is an online platform which builds and raises the profiles of creative artists within Africa from one region to the next whilst bringing light to fresh new sounds from the continent. Our Team is based in two locations: London, UK and Nairobi, Kenya. I am a regular member of the reaction team on our youtube channel, videographer and events coordinator which involves organising press coverage for various events.
