The Peckham Pelican is a non-conventional gallery space as it also operates as a cafe/bar venue. I was invited as a guest curator to introduce monthly pop-up exhibitions that focus on conceptual/contemporary art.
14TH CINEMA is a concept exhibit space/curatorial platform that showcases contemporary artists that work with film, installation and performance. Its aim is to redefine the boundaries of the gallery by employing the use of transitional and unconventional spaces.
My role working as a gallery intern at Vilma Gold is to assist in running the daily operations of the gallery. This includes assisting with the installation of exhibitions, writing press releases and creating newsletters for distribution, organising files and updating databases, keeping catalogues and artists press packs up to date using InDesign and Photoshop and packaging artwork with care in preparation for transport and storage.
Assisted in running the daily operations of one of Londons most prominent contemporary Middle Eastern art galleries during a solo exhibition for Iraqi artist, Sadiq Kwaish Alfraji. My main duties included assisting the gallery manager with curation of exhibition, welcoming and assisting visitors and providing them with information, general administrative tasks and handling sales of books, managing records and maintaining databases using Egnyte, Artlogic and Gallery Manager and performing day-to-day maintenance such as: opening/closing, answering phones, inventory, etc.
Working closely with the head curator, I assisted in the curation of an exhibition looking at conflict in the Middle East and the possibilities of the regions future. The exhibition aimed to answer/explore questions/themes such as: How does water scarcity affect the Region? What kind of weapon technology is used to engage in the conflicts? How do Western democracies act in the region? My main duties included conducting research, creating and maintaining client lists and contact databases, liaising with the artist, publishers, journalists and gallerists, creating and distributing press release for exhibition, organising events and managing social media platforms and providing visitors with information.
During my year studying Fine Art at the Art Academy I learnt to develop my artistic practice. The year concluded with a group exhibition where I displayed 3 pieces exploring themes of identity, boundaries and censorship.
