About me
Niall Grant is an Illustrator with a hand in fine-drawing and traditional mark-making. He creates emotive scenes of wistful characters and creatures, employing folklore and cryptic symbolism to express ideas of sensitivity, apathy, repressed energy and escape. Niall has worked to create album covers, posters and editorial artwork. Some clients include Sony and Universal Records. Published work has been sold in the Tate Modern bookshop and worldwide. Exhibited Artworks have been shown in London, Berlin and Japan.
Projects
  • Daku Series
Daku SeriesThis series focuses on my interpretation of the folkloric stories of Hidetaka Miyizaki, with a particular emphasis on character design. I aimed to capture the dark and otherworldly aesthetic often contained within folklore, both Japanese and European. This resulted in a body of organic and fantastical illustrations.
  • Amelia's Magazine - Mater Gaia
Amelia's Magazine - Mater GaiaIllustration for That Which We Do Not Understand. The 10th anniversary limited edition book and fine art prints from Amelia's Magazine. Mater Gaia appears in the book That Which We Do Not Understand, sold from various book shops including the prestigious Tate Modern bookshop. The limited edition print was made with real gold foiling, and sold at the launch night at Tatty Devine. It is now stocked by East End Prints.
  • The Colour of Pomegranates
The Colour of PomegranatesPersonal project based on the film The Colour of Pomegrantates (1969). The film is a super-stylized, surreal biography of Armenian troubadour Sayat Nova, whose life is depicted through a series of Tableau vivants; brief moments of non-narrative amalgamations of poetic images. I re-imagined iconic portraits from the film, focussing on capturing the feelings and atmospheres within the scenes. I took visual inspiration from Armenian native dress and Architecture. My images were created with fineliners and indian inks. Colour was added digitally to give a sense of light and warmth.
  • Screen Prints
Screen PrintsA selection of artwork which i have created and screen printed. These prints have been sold worldwide.
  • King Of The Monsters
King Of The MonstersAlternative poster created for the 2014 release of Godzilla.
  • Ensemble
EnsembleI was asked to produce a narrative series based on the film Ensemble, by director and friend Denis Novojilov. he film’s gentle pace and otherworldly aesthetic was something I needed to capture, achieving this with line-work that was stripped-down yet expressive. The illustrations were then printed into posters and 10-page constantina booklets to accompany the film at screenings.
