  • The Fling Festival
The Fling FestivalThe Fling Festival of Assorted Amusements returns to Chelmsford's Central Park this summer on Saturday 6 July. At the last Fling in 2011, adults up to the age of 80+ enjoyed live music, stand-up comedy and cabaret alongside quirkier activities like adult storytelling, costume-making and burlesque classes. The Fling offers an intriguing alternative to the usual night out and alongside playful activities, stars a fabulous cast of professional artistes and Chelmsford talent who will explore, seduce and surprise your senses through performances, sideshows, poetry, a huge silent disco and much more. Once within the site, most activities are free and will include several live performance venues such as: Live Music Stage Cabaret Tent, including burlesque performers Comedy Tent Dance Tent Silent Disco Poetry Tent Acoustic Music Stage Films, art and installations Storytelling for adults Craft and Body-painting activities Charity Casino Massage and Therapy Space Sandy Beach Stalls Sideshows and other curious activities Bars, food & cafes Other venues to be confirmed There will be a selection of food, soft drinks and alcohol available to purchase at the event. The Fling is about the magnitude of small wonders you’ll discover rather than headline acts but the festival has already secured some great music acts. The Correspondents are a duo of musical mixologists who, with their high speed scatting and incredulous dance moves earned them The Telegraph’s Top Ten Highlights of Glastonbury two years in a row. Janice Long of Radio One said of Public Service Broadcasting that they were ‘Amazing, I absolutely love it – fantastic!’ and have gone on to win accolades on 6 Music and elsewhere. The third act to be announced for The Fling (with dozens more to come) is Extra Curricular, a group that combine soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture. They’ve been pushing their unique brand of soul-driven music on the UK underground live circuit since early 2009 and their live show is something to be witnessed.

Sparks will Fly:Essex Finale & Chelmsford welcomes the London 2012 Olympic Torch RelayOn the 6 July 2012 Hylands Park, Chelmsford played host to a special occasion with three distinct elements. This spectacular event for the whole family commenced with the county’s only London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration. The live stage show was one of 66 performances that will take place around the country as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. It featured exciting entertainment by the three Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partners as well as specially choreographed performances by Pinpoint Create and Walk the Plank working Chelmsford community groups and large-scale audience participation. The culmination of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration was of course be the arrival of the Torch and the lighting of the onstage cauldron from the Olympic Flame. Following the Torch Relay Evening Celebration, the audience were invited into an adjacent area of the event site to feast, drink and play. A huge variety of refreshments were available including the best of Essex food and drink. There was plenty to do with displays of community sports and arts suitable for all the family. Local music, dance and other performances mixed with inspiring examples of physical prowess, accessible have-a-go sports sessions and an abundance of arts and crafts activities. As the sun begins to set, the world-renowned Red Devils Parachute Display Team descended on Hylands Park with a spectacular display carrying with them the final glass bead to enable the game to begin in the Sparks will Fly: Essex Finale. Then the two great champions Boreas Zephyr and Marina Mightier completed their marathon journeys across Essex and came face-to-face for the first time. The expectant crowd were led towards the performance arena where Marina and Boreas competed resulting in a stunning finale to the evening with pyrotechnics, special effects and a spectacular firework display to finish. The finale show was created by outdoor arts specialists Walk the Plank
