I am a knitwear designer specialising in womenswear. I collect my inspiration by recording visual information through the use of photography which often leads to the basis of my collections. I work mainly on a single-bed knit machine and often delve into hand embroidery when adding edging and finishing touches to my garments. I am greatly inspired by the world around me. I take interest in my every day surroundings and try to create them into something special. My final collection is inspired by my year spent on the island of Inis Meáin. I was drawn in by the stone walls, which were also the inspiration for the name of my collection; Ballaí, which is the word for ‘walls’ in the Irish language. The ocean floors at low tide also inspired me and these occur frequently throughout my collection. These aspects are seen in the colour palette of my garments and also in the shape and styling. I have created wearable garments with underlying hints of my inspiration emerging. I want my garments to tell a story and each one has a personal meaning from the island which makes each one unique. I work with natural yarns such as super geelong lambswool and baby alpaca and silk which have been sponsored by Inis Meáin Knitting Company. This gives my collection that personal touch and automatic connection to the island.
