  • Submarine
SubmarineMilly James - Submarine - Music Video Taken off the Submarine EP. Love Sexy Records (2016). Produced by DJ Raw Sugar. Vocalist Milly James teams up with Love Sexy Records bossman DJ Raw Sugar on this intra-aqueous, four track journey below. It dips into the depths of future soul and trip-hop but an important distinction to make here is that there's no revisionism and this is not just about sticking heaps of delay on a rimshot. Downbeat and expansive, it's tumultuous torch song and pensive pop. The production is an exercise in focus and restraint; DJ Raw Sugar applying the juice where need be and backing off when things need to just breathe. Moments of android stank bleed in and out of extended sessions of after hours half-jazz and shades of navy blue, forming a beautiful interplay with the vocal. Oh the vocal... Owing in large part to Milly James' delivery is a readily apparent (but difficult to identify) strain running throughout the entire EP, like a Bacharach cut from the hazy end of a life well lived rather than the Top 10. Apathetic prescience or a burnt out sense of optimism - it's hard to say. Slinky, smoky and unfairly natural, Milly's is an expressive voice that excels in the passive - drawing you in rather than beating you over the head with a forced sense of emotion.

  • Eins Zwei Disco EP (Love Sexy Records)
Eins Zwei Disco EP (Love Sexy Records)LSR002 DJ Raw Sugar - Eins Zwei Disco EP Love Sexy Records’ bossman DJ Raw Sugar dishes up another fine selection of his own gear for the label’s second release. This one kicks off with the vibrantly smooth and smoothly vibrant “Eins Zwei Disco”, a bouncy portion of future movement built upon a rubbery, logical bassline. While Inkswel was on remix duty for the first release it is Voyeurhythm’s Megadon Betamax who swings through this time to take the track up and beyond and somehow manages to add even more optimism and brightness to what was already a positive slice of future disco. From there it’s back to DJ Raw Sugar with the piano-dripping mid-afternoon burner of “Break It Down” and off-kilter beyond-the-grave ghost jazz of “Why Don’t You”. DJ Support: Trujillo - "...really love the music you are doing and the complete look out of the label! Full support." The Noodleman - "...great record. Can't wait to have it on my decks." Kon - "...sounding good, especially 'Why Don't You'" Andras Fox - "...'Break it Down' - Jam!" LeSale - "This is like a fresh breeze...Big!" Yam Who? - "...nice one!" Mannmademusic - "...lovely stuff"
