I completed my BSc in Human Sciences at UCL in 2012 and my MSc in Science Media Production at Imperial College London in 2013. My interest in pursuing a career in communication developed during my undergraduate studies and I’ve always been in interested in filmmaking and storytelling. The MSc seemed like a natural fit and I’ve been writing and making videos and podcasts ever since.
I am responsible for maintaining the multimedia presence of this Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) publisher. Over the past two years, I have improved the overall quality and consistency of the multimedia content by overseeing the production of all content and developing new video and podcast formats. I have also worked with colleagues to increase the reach of the content over social media and the views on our YouTube channel have increased by 20% each year since I started. Tasks include the following: - Filming and editing informational videos as well as recording and editing podcasts for internal and external audiences. - Writing blogs to promote the videos or podcasts. - Creating animations and graphics in Adobe After Effects. - Planning, researching and co-ordinating the video and podcast production. - Filming and photographing at international conferences and events. - Maintaining the YouTube channel and analysing audience statistics.
During this one week work placement, I gained insight into the workings of an ad agency by shadowing people across various departments, such as creative, account planning and account management. This experience confirmed that I would like to work in an environment in which creative projects that are commercially minded, are central to the work.
Assisted the producers and directors of this production company in the planning and organisation of upcoming documentary projects including the Channel 4 show Sex Box, by researching facts, background information and possible contributors.
Assisted science editors in the production of radio programmes and further wrote science articles for the online science page (available in German on science.orf.at).
Inspected contracts for errors, worked at the reception to welcome customers and handle phone calls and further participated in administrative work.
Assisted lawyers in their administrative work and research and helped with the translation of information from English to German and vice versa.
Helped to raise money for Amnesty International by talking to people on the street and explaining the cause.
Intensive masters in filmmaking and radio production underpinned by the study of film theory, storytelling and the philosophy and sociology of science.
This interdisciplinary degree allowed me to study the human being in its biological, social, cultural and historical context. Subjects included: genetics, immunology, population studies, science communication and the history of science.
