About me
Painting has always been for me a crucial means of expression, of breaking boundaries of everyday reality. Painting allowed me to escape my troubles, to break free dramatically from this seemingly imprisoning life. I compose theatrical environments that are imbued with exaggeration, immoderate expression of feelings alongside a meeting of cultures and a dose of fantasy. Born to a Russian mother and a Nigerian father, I was brought up in Moscow, Russia with little sense of personal worth. Emigrating as a teenager to Antwerp, Belgium, having no family and rarely anyone to rely on, was often bleak, constraining. Having found my passion in art I've been able to prove myself that I'm worth it, that I can show to the world how gifted and great I am. Referring to the name of the last Russian tsar (who happened to be my namesake and to be born on the same day as I), to the first book I read (the soberly fantastical “le Petit Prince”, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry) and to the late artist Prince, choosing an artistic name was no brainer for me. In my paintings, I see myself as a film director composing narratives from unrelated source images to develop an uncanny dramatic scene. I search for my “actors” either in candid shots I make of random people or film stills. Inspired by the story of my life or the fantasy I have of it, I invent a story, flexing the muscles of my artistic powers, impressing through a sense of drama. Always searching for an unexpected, deviated subject.
