About me
I am a recent postgraduate from Cardiff University, where I did a Master in International Journalism, specializing in Documentary Journalism. During my studies, I gained a detailed understanding of various topics related to both linguistic and broadcast fields, as well as valuable, first-hand experience as a director, camera operator and video/audio editor. I have indeed directed, shot and edited four short documentaries, one of which has been nominated as best short documentary at the Wales International Documentary Festival. I have also attained proficient verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish. Having studied in a Master, I had the opportunity to challenge myself with the day-to-day problems of a professional journalist. I wrote long features as well as short news and gained remarkable interviewing skills, given the fact that I also had to shoot my documentaries, which require a closer relationship and mutual trust with the interviewees. Throughout this period, I have developed outstanding motivation and an ability to pursue long and short-term goals. I had the opportunity to acquire excellent team working skills and to develop a remarkable ability to work under pressure, two skills that I believe are essential in a workplace like BBC. My master course offered the best possible preparation to shape myself as a well-rounded person, and encouraged me to think differently by analyzing issues through the linguistic and cultural lenses of other countries. I am now ready and willing to put my knowledge into practice. During the year I spent at Cardiff University, I built a strong and solid background in both documentary making, and news and feature writing. Thanks to the documentaries I made, I acquired a thorough experience in researching, finding archive material, setting up shoots; furthermore, I understood the importance to find engaging characters and stories that are newsworthy. In addition, before and during the shooting, my team and I had to deal with budgets, schedules and risk assessments. This helped me to understand the importance of working in a planned and safe environment, where there are deadlines and the product is always delivered in time. I also spent time gathering and writing news, as well as long features. This helped me to build outstanding writing skills, flexibility and curiosity. Thanks to the articles I wrote, I acquired experience in thinking critically and became able to analyse and interpret contemporary events in their larger context. Alongside my studies I cultivated a thorough knowledge of new techlonogies and media relations. In particular, I am personally interested in how media and communication strategies have changed, especially due to the shift from printed media towards radio, television, and social networks. The Internet has been quickly and radically changing the way we access information. The first appearance of online newspapers has undoubtedly been a critical turning point in the news market. Indeed, newspapers lost a defining feature: being made of paper. This led to a fluid and unlimited supply of free information. In this process, the role of the audience has become increasingly active insofar as readers are able to comment, compare, and select the products they consume. The web thus creates a space in which the journalist seems to be on an immediate and ongoing interaction with the reader. I have always had a natural interest for a wide range of subjects and I believe this to be a necessary condition for undertaking this career. For me, this kind of perceptive and dedicated curiosity is the main quality a journalist should have. I have always been eager to have first-hand experience with phenomena and investigate raw data. Furthermore, I consider myself a natural storyteller. In fact, besides reading and studying literature, I also often get inspired and write down fictional short stories. For these reasons, I strongly believe that I am well suited for a career in journalism.
