THE QUICKIE Head of design at Forward Partners, the UK's leading early-stage VC. THE WORK STUFF So what do I actually do at FP you ask? Quite literally I’m the point of contact for ALL design work. I juggle a lot of different projects daily for FP while also working internally with our pre-seed founders and externally helping our seed companies level up. I help with UX decisions and create static or animated prototypes in InVision or Proto.io then I design responsive UI's while preparing assets for development. I create and manage company specific Design Systems so teams can stay lean and iterate quickly and then I’m creating marketing assets when needed. Things like, social media graphics, keynotes, guideline docs, etc. I’m not all digital though. I started my career in the print industry so I’m always eager to design and prepare files for print. Nothing like a soft touch, perfect bound book in your hands. Sexy! That covers the whole product designer bit of my role but there’s more. I help create our companies brands and I love this more than most. I do this by running brand strategy workshops to better inform business and experience decisions and then I create identities and assets off the back of that data. It’s not all about just looking pretty. There’s got to be a reason I chose to use Gilroy ExtraLight instead of Helvetica Regular. There’s got to be a reason why your buttons are rounded 5px rather than being square and sharp. These details matter and I live in them, by choice. So there you have it. My role in a few paragraphs. THE PERSONALITY I think most people would classify me as a hard-working, positive character with a slight sarcastic humour bone. FUN FACTS I’m a husband I’m a dog father (2 labradors) I’m an actual human father I’m a painter I’m more of a whiskey fan than a whisky fan. Responsible for multiple design projects including complete website designs for 2 separate websites, static and animated web ads, print ads and other misc. supporting marketing material for web and print.
Worked on maintaining brand guidelines while creating engaging and informative ads for international brands such as Nestle, Nokia, John Deere, Kimberly Clark and Sherwin Williams. In my few months there I created hundreds of ads for digital and print ranging in size from 3.5in x 5in to 47ft billboards.
Efficiently led a design team of three through hundreds of direct mail pieces in a fast-paced environment. Responsible for overseeing all print material from concept through delivery of print ready file (pre-press). Successfully completed over 1,000 marketing pieces (several million printed) in five years. Senior Designer • 2010 - 2012 Led design team through hundreds of print pieces and created all company marketing materials including award winning (GD USA) self promotion packaging. Junior Designer • 2008 - 2010 Successfully designed and pre-pressed several hundred pieces of direct mail in a fast-paced environment. Formats ranged from 6in x 4in postcards to multi-fold 8.5in x 27in.
