Introduction I’m an interior designer, presenter, diversity & inclusion consultant and careers mentor. My experience as a creative within the built environment spans three decades, initially working as an interior designer in the workplace, hospitality, retail and residential sectors. After gaining substantial experience working as a freelance interior designer for practices such as RPA Europe, MCM Architects and Design International, I set up my own consultancy, Simon Hamilton & Associates Ltd, which I led as Managing Director between 2002 – 2013. Championing Interior Design In 2010, I was elected to the position of International Director for the British Institute of Interior Design (BIID), a position I initially held for four years. During my tenure, I worked as an ambassador for British Design on the international stage, which included increasing the international profile of the Institute, developing and managing international relationships for the Institute and its membership, and hosting events, talks and seminars to further the BIID’s interests. During this time, I was tasked with visiting the British Consulate and British Embassies in Chicago, Kyoto, Los Angeles, Milan, Moscow, New Delhi, Osaka, Paris, Tokyo, Toronto, and Valencia and more to raise the profile of British interior design professionals. Diversity, Inclusion & Mentoring I have continued to enjoy an enduring relationship with the BIID and in 2020, I was appointed to its newly formed Diversity & Inclusion Committee to assist the BIID with its mission to address the lack of diversity in the interior design sector. Throughout my career, I have translated my industry experience to specialize in design recruitment as a consultant for leading agencies in London. This, coupled with my passion for mentoring led me to establish another business, Design Career Consulting, in 2019. DCC was created specifically to provide support for design graduates and young professionals looking to start a career in the creative sector. This includes consultations for their CVs and portfolios, interview preparation, in addition to mentoring, sharing networking skills and bespoke one-to-one support. To complement working closely with private clients and designers, DCC collaborates with universities, design schools, and educators including Heriot-Watt University in Scotland and the University of Plymouth in Devon, England. In early 2020, I was appointed as Editor and Content Curator of the Resource Hub of United In Design, a charity set up by Interior Designers Sophie Ashby and Alexandria Dauley to address the lack of diversity and inclusion in interior design. I have since collaborated with several organisations and higher education institutions as a consultant to help them navigate issues regarding race, ethnicity, sexuality and unconscious bias. Presenting & Lecturing I am also a keynote speaker, host and brand ambassador, most recently sitting on the judging panel for the Interior Design section of the Sustainability Category for the Dezeen Awards 2021, and continuing as judge for the International Property Awards. During the London Design Festival 2021, I hosted a panel discussion 'What next for designers in the 21st century - a conversation with a selection of interior designers to discuss their responses to issues raised in the last 18 months and what the industry could look like in the future.' Over the past decade, I have expanded my experience in mentoring to education working as a visiting tutor at a number of design schools including Central Saint Martins, University of The Arts London, Chelsea College of Art, London, Elle Education, Madrid and The Interior Design School, London. In 2021 I featured as a design expert on BBC 1 interior design show, ‘Virtually Home’, which used the latest virtual reality technology to help couples resolve their interior design dilemmas. In February 2022 I will be hosting the awards for the 10th edition of The Surface Design Show in London and have been invited onto the jury of the DNA Paris Design Awards. As 2022 unfolds, I will be hosting and speaking at several other events throughout the year. Out of office The youngest of five children, I was born and raised in North London. My interests are varied, but include driving electric cars on long road trips around Europe to inspire my design work, and listening to all types of music, but mainly Motown, jazz and dance music to relax. I now divide my time between the U.K and Europe, as I expand my portfolio career across Europe as a designer, mentor and presenter.
