About me
Simon Russell established Miracle Ingredient in 2005 to deliver documentary, film, production, radio and online projects for Rough Trade Shops, Nokia, Sony Music, Warner Music, The Barbican Centre, The ICA, The Chisenhale Gallery, Faber & Faber, Blast First Petite and Resonance FM. Simon was Producer and Director of Photography for ‘I've Nothing But My Name - Iggy Pop in conversation with Thurston Moore’, a film commissioned to mark the occasion of Iggy Pop's 'Post Pop Depression' album being voted Rough Trade Shops Album of the Year 2016. Having enjoyed a close association with Rough Trade Shops for 20 years, he is currently developing ‘Original Version’, the story of their forty-year history, as a full-length documentary feature film in a writer / directorial role, while also overseeing the project from pre-production onwards. From assistant managing the West London Rough Trade Shop, Simon went on to establish an archival subdivision and online video channel for the company, documenting more than 250 of the Shops’ key live events of the last decade, including Queens of the Stone Age, Mac DeMarco, Courtney Barnett, Kendrick Lamar, Neneh Cherry, The Pretenders, Beck's ‘Song Reader’, Public Enemy and many more. During this time he produced Rough Trade Shops' compilation series - from conception and track selection, through licensing, production, mastering, design, manufacture and marketing - of over 40 CDs, LPs and singles released on the Mute, V2, Coop and [PIAS] record labels, including the establishment of the Shops’ annual Counter Culture CD series. Simon has been commissioned to film live events for Chris & Cosey, Factory Floor, The Pop Group, Foals, Keaton Henson and more at venues such as the ICA and The Garage. At Resonance 104FM, Simon established, produced and co-presented the weekly Rough Trade Shops Counter Culture Radio show for 13 years. He has also DJ’d extensively, including at special events for Christian Marclay, Ron Arad, and Pulp at venues including Tate Modern, The Barbican Centre, Brixton Academy and the Sonar Festival in Barcelona. Simon produced the CD for Bruce Nauman’s ‘Raw Materials’ exhibit in the Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall in 2004, managed production of a limited edition vinyl and art print box set for Kim Gordon’s (Sonic Youth) ‘Perfect Partner’ project in 2005, co-curated the music program for Frieze Art Fair in 2004 and wrote sleeve notes for Can’s ‘Landed’ CD (Mute) amongst other projects. He previously designed a sportswear range for Miracle Ingredient Sport which was sold in Sign of the Times and World in London and Patricia Field in New York, worn by musicians Snap (in the ‘I’ve Got The Power’ video), Ziggy Marley and Dee-Lite and which also featured in Vogue and i-D magazines.
