Product Developer (Furniture)York, United Kingdom
About me
I'm a furniture and product developer with varied industry experience having worked for several well respected contemporary furniture manufacturers including SCP in London and Massproductions in Stockholm. With experience developing products designed by the likes of Jasper Morrison & Matthew Hilton I have an exceptionally detailed understanding of furniture construction and how to take a product from initial sketch through to production. My work has taken me to a huge variety of specialist factories throughout Europe and as such I have extensive knowledge of sourcing and specifying for manufacture. My personal work is a range of high-quality artisan brushes for the home. This small but critically acclaimed body of work has been featured in publications such as Wallpaper* and The world of Interiors and sells through retailers in the UK, USA and Asia.

One project example involved developing five speaker cabinets for established audio brand PMC. The customer supplied basic PDF drawings which I worked up in Solidworks and Alphacam in order to machine components and refine production. The customer required a high‐quality and reasonably priced product, which meant that efficiency of manufacture was critical to the success of the project. In leading this hands‐on development process, I developed machine programmes, created prototypes, produced jigs, designed tooling and operated both manual and CNC woodworking machines ‐ gaining extensive experience operating an SCM 5 axis router.

Building on the wide range of skills I gained at SCP, I developed contract furniture for a diverse range of environments, from cruise ships to co‐working spaces. Key duties and achievements include: • Successfully leading the product development process for two new products: a wooden lounge chair and a conference table with a cast concrete base. Massproductions furniture is certified by the Swedish Möbelfakta system, meaning that I was responsible for ensuring that strict quality, environmental and social responsibility requirements were fulfilled throughout the development process. • During my 8 months with the company, I assessed and resolved a number of production and quality issues arising in existing products. In doing so, I applied a rigorous problem‐solving approach, analysing original production drawings alongside information provided by clients as part of the warranty claims process. After identifying the root cause of a fault, I refined the original designs to improve product quality. • I worked with the relevant supplier to agree any changes to a product’s design. This required clear and concise communication, as I was often working with people who spoke English as a second language. Through careful relationship building, including site visits across Europe, I established and maintained strong and trusting relationships with suppliers. I also visited clients who had received poor quality product to assure them of the improvements being made and ensure their ongoing custom.

Starter For Six - Creative Business FundingNesta
Over the course of six months I attended business development workshops facilitated by Nesta in Dundee. At the end of the process I pitch for and was awarded £5,000 funding to further develop a range of products designed during my final year of study at Edinburgh College of Art. These products are manufactured by myself and are available to purchase.
