About me
I'm Tuike Tuominen, I'm a Graphic Design student at Cambridge School of Art in Anglia Ruskin. As well as Graphic Design, I'm also interested in Illustration and hope to improve on both fields as I continue studying and working on personal projects! I come from the rural countryside of Finland, and I draw a lot of my inspiration from nature and processes that can not be fully controlled, While I'm not a complete stranger to HTML and CSS and have built websites in the past, I feel most confident working in illustration and print/publication design. I also have strong interest in animation and concept art. I'm fond of drawing, animals, nature, countryside, cartoons and animated features, comics, video games, food and fantasy/mythical creatures and realms and folk lore. You can contact me by email at tuiketuominen(at)gmail.com or on my UK mobile (07752653445) or Finnish mobile (+358404109393)
Projects
  • Personal Journal of Bilinguality
Personal Journal of BilingualityA5-sized book/magazine on my personal experiences of being able to communicate in both Finnish and English done as a university project. All illustrations are done by me. Covers and pattern on the glue page of the book were inspired and made from three letters that are a part of Finnish alphabet but do not appear in English alphabet; å, ä and ö, I felt the missing special letters were one clear difference between the languages PDF of the book can be seen here: https://issuu.com/tuike/docs/personal_journal_web_pages
  • Penguin Design Award 2015 - Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit
Penguin Design Award 2015 - Oranges Are Not The Only FruitI entered Penguin Random House Design award in 2015, for Adult Fiction Cover Award. My entry was shortlisted in the competition: http://penguinrandomhousedesignaward.co.uk/pda2015_ttuominen.php The concept of my design is based on the feelings and themes of rebirth and growing up, the purification that is forced on Jeanette and how she is forced to change. The torn-out book cover represents this brutality of the change and having to find your own personality and story again. The traces of bleach are a hint to purification and also to the sometimes dream-like quality of the book. The design also very literally represents how you need to take the book apart in order to reveal the underlying themes and to understand the story.
  • Element posters
Element posters2nd year university project. Our brief was to pick three elements from the periodic table and create three A3/A2 posters using materials related to them, with most of the design work done by hand rather than on computer. I researched multiple elements, and in the end chose to do posters on Thallium, Phosphorus and Rhodium. Thallium poster was created by cutting up used socks, Phosphorus uses matchsticks and coca cola (since phosphoric acid can be found in those), and letters in Rhodium are made from roses since the element's name comes from a word that means "rose" in greek.
