The cold water is ready to use whenever you please. However, the hot water goes through the water heater to make the water hot for you. Once the cold water moves in the water heater, a hot water line sends it to all the appliances and fixtures, ready to be used. The heater has a thermostat that warms the water at your chosen temperature.
