About me
I’m a graphic designer, 3D artist and animator living in London. I graduated from a Graphic Design BA at Central Saint Martins in 2011 and have been based at Tanc Design for the past 5 years, where I’ve progressed to Senior Designer. Clients have ranged from small businesses and events, to the likes of Cadbury, Mondelez, United Biscuits, and Nyrstar.
Projects
  • Colmore Business District
Colmore Business DistrictColmore Row and the surrounding area is traditionally Birmingham’s most sought-after business address, with a history reaching back to the 1700’s. On behalf of Tanc, I entered a pitch to refresh the branding for Colmore Business District, designing a logomark that featured a visual timeline of some of the area’s noteworthy buildings. This made sense to begin with a build-up, and reference a colourful, varied history, before touching on the bright future ahead.
  • Go Ahead!
Go Ahead!A recent project for Pladis/United Biscuits involved collaborating with their R&D team to come up with new ideas for future Go Ahead packaging. Unfortunately I can’t show that work due to confidentiality, but as part of the process I produced a detailed model of the existing packaging on shelves. First built in Cinema 4D and finished in Photoshop, my models included both the inner and outer packs — making use of bump maps, masked texture-mapping (allowing various print-finishing effects) and subdivision surfaces, to result in as much realism as possible.
  • Chef Stagiaire Award
Chef Stagiaire AwardThe Chef Stagiaire Award involves some of the top Rosetted and Michelin Starred restaurants in the UK, challenging aspiring under-25’s in a test of culinary finesse, for a chance to win a stage (like a high-end internship) alongside a world-class chef. Tanc were engaged to design a visual identity that would appeal to restaurateurs and potential candidates alike, with a look that would fit the prestige around the venues and people involved. I was given the task of designing the logo and print items:
  • Star News
Star NewsNyrstar are the market-leaders in zinc and lead mining/smelting, with growing positions in other base and precious metals. One of our most regular projects for them at Tanc has been StarNews — a 20-page corporate newsletter, which we’ve produced 6 issues of, in 4 languages (English, French, Dutch and Spanish). I took care of most of the design and layout work, as well as project-managing more recent issues. A fast turn-around was often required, with text-amends right up until the deadline — definitely a good way of building copy-fitting skills considering all of those long Dutch words.
  • Limited Edition Cadbury Bars
Limited Edition Cadbury BarsOne of our long-standing clients at Tanc has been Cadbury, whose main UK office is in Bournville, Birmingham. On two occasions we’ve been asked to produce designs for limited edition runs of Dairy Milk bars, given as gifts to staff. I produced both sets of artwork, and visualised them in Cinema 4D — modelling, texturing and shading the packaging to mimic the purple sheen of the substrate that Cadbury use.
  • Barnbrook Christmas Poster
Barnbrook Christmas PosterI was asked by Phil and Catherine at Central Saint Martins to design a poster for a talk given by ex-student Jonathan Barnbrook, in the run-up to Christmas. Jonathan is a designer I looked upto whilst studying, so I really wanted to do his work justice.

    Full Time
Clients have included Mondelēz, United Biscuits/Go Ahead!, Cadbury/Cadbury World, a global mining company (Nyrstar), a local alcohol distributor (Goldbeach), a catering recruitment agency (Jubilee) and a national exhibition stand manufacturer (Tecna). At Tanc I’ve needed to combine speed with thoroughness, as well as being able to stay creative under pressure. I’ve produced brand identities, printed collatoral, digital creative and animations, and have been given increasingly more autonomy. More recently I’ve managed entire projects, from quoting, to client meetings, to concept-generation and design, to instructing freelancers, and final dispatch of artwork. I’ve also visualised packaging concepts for R&D departments at Mondelez and United Biscuits. I’ve been told my cups of tea have improved a lot too…

     -
My 3 years at CSM very much centred around conceptual thinking. Crit sessions were very thorough, forcing us to be decisive and do our research. As the course progressed we were encouraged to develop our own individual approaches, and I began to give visual form to my own writing. I was also a keen member of Phil Baines’ type interest group throughout, and in my last year was head of the degree show curation team.
