'A Recipe for Loneliness' grassroots cookbook / essay publication
'A Recipe for Loneliness' is a Masters project that aims to create a cookbook meets socio-political essayic / photo book that explores the immigrant experience via recipes.
We want to highlight the vein that runs between the intimacy of food / food-preparing and the public outer world of history-making.
We're looking for contributors:
1) who are willing to share an essay or poem or dialogue exchange that highlights their experience of immigration (the bureaucracy, the adventure, the loneliness, the integration, etc.) as well as a recipe that they often make that reminds them of home.
2) Any articles or essays that touch on relevant topics such as food apartheid / or community gardening / or ancestry-tracing via ingredients used / seeding initiatives, etc.
Details
- Deadline for essays + recipes: 5 December 2024
- Estimated publication date: 15 May 2025
- Payment: As it's a student project, we unfortunately don't have a budget but we can send each contributor a copy of the book.
- How you decide to write your essay or poem is entirely up to you (2 - 4 pages). We prefer that it's done personally and within each persons' own voice. It can be recounting your grandmothers' journey to another country, it can be one single issue you experienced with food at a certain time = we invite all intersections. However, we would like for it to touch upon socio-political themes at some point.
- You can show how the recipe is originally done in your home country and how it's been adapted to a new variant in your new country. Or you can just explore one recipe and its story of adaptation.
- Limited edition of 200 books / No advertisers / Self-published
