I'm researching into how self-publishing authors feel about being edited. Do you consider it unnecessary? too expensive?

Self-publishing authors (indies) who don't use editors seem to fall into two groups -- the ones who would appreciate being edited if they could afford it, and the ones who don't want it or feel they need it. Which group do you belong to? Tell me why?

  • Thanks for your input, Laura. Lack of funds seems to be a common isuse, alaas. Of course, proofreading is only the final 'net' that catches any errors that weren't found during the editing process. And the deep work of a developmental edit is the only one that can really give your story another 'layer'.
  • Hi Alex! I am an indie author and had two of my manuscripts published nearly 10 years ago, if I would have had the funds I would have both manuscripts edited and re-printed. I think that having someone else proofread your text, the text you have written too many times already, is so important and gives the story another layer. It'll create more depth and a fresh pair of eyes can never do wrong in my opinion!
