Marsh's Canada beats U.S. for first time in 67 years...

Canada's national team, led by Jesse Marsh, who has been touted as a possible candidate for the South Korean national soccer team job, earned its first away win over the United States in 67 years.

The Canadian soccer team defeated the U.S. 2-1 in a friendly match at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, U.S., on Monday (Sept. 8).

Canada opened the scoring in the 17th minute on a goal by winger Jacob Schaffelberg and added a goal by Jonathan David 13 minutes into the second half to make it 2-0.

The U.S. scored a late goal from midfielder Luca DeLatore in the 21st minute, but it was not enough to turn the tide.

The U.S. is ranked 16th by FIFA, but Canada (40th) dominated the match, outshooting them 17-8 on the day and 7-5 in shots on goal.

According to the Associated Press, it had been 67 years since Canada had won an away A-match against the United States. Prior to this game, the last victory came in a World Cup qualifier in Sweden in July 1957 (3-2).

Unlike away, the last home win was relatively recent. They defeated the United States 2-0 at home in January 2022 in a World Cup qualifier in Qatar.

Canada has improved significantly since Marsh, who had been mentioned as a possible national team coach, took over in May.

In their first appearance at the 2024 Copa America (South American Football Championship) in June and July, they reached the quarterfinals under Marsh.

In the quarterfinals, they lost 0-2 to eventual champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), to reach the final. In the third-place game, they played South American giants Uruguay 2-2 before losing 3-4 on penalties to finish fourth.

According to AFP, Marsh said after the win, “I think the players have grown mentally. I can see that they love playing for the national team,” Marsh said after the win.

“They're doing their best for each other and for the team. They are putting their lives and careers on the line and are focused on the national team,” he said.

Meanwhile, North and Central American powerhouse United States, who were eliminated in the group stage of the Copa America, also bowed their heads in an exhibition match at home immediately after the tournament.

The Americans, who fired head coach Greg Berholter in July, have yet to name a new coach.

Mauricio Pochettino, who coached South Korean soccer sensation Son Heung-min at Tottenham (England), is expected to take the reins until 2019.

Local media outlets have been reporting since the middle of last month that Pochettino had agreed to a contract with the U.S. Soccer Federation, but an official announcement has yet to be made.

According to Fox Sports, the official announcement was delayed as Pochettino's former club Chelsea (England) and the U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF), which parted ways with Pochettino in May, continue to discuss financial matters, including the payment of his remaining salary.
