14 types + 2

A study about colour psychology and designers

This project was an exercise I've done together with my design class at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica of Venice in 2011. All the 16 students have been given a test that would associate their personalities to 2 primary colours, depending on general attitude, habits and other evaluating parameters.
Blue, Red, Yellow & White, what colours are you?
These are the colours resulting from the test.
Following some of the meanings:
  • - RED: dreamers, logic, responsible, rebellious, proud
  • - BLU: loyal, safe, fair, rancorous
  • - YELLOW: tolerant, patient, helpful, obstinate, shy
  • - WHITE: positive, confident, open, unstable, self-centred
  • With the colours assigned, every student had to create a self-portrait using just types
The result was a very colourful poster showcasing every student’s graphic solution and personality. Looking at it you can immediately see how differently everyone interpreted the brief. Different typography used, different weighting and use of the space, and a personal view of ourselves.
The name “14 types + 2” has been chosen because in the course we were 14 girls and just 2 guys. :)
