2020 Penguin Student Awards - Children's Cover
The 2020 Penguin student awards brief for the children's book was to redesign the cover of Goodnight Mister Tom by Michelle Magorian.
In the story a young boy William Beech is evacuated during WW2 to the country and is placed with an old man called Tom Oakley. William is unable to read or write but has an amazing ability to draw. Tom embraces Williams abilities and helps him learn to read and write becoming a father figure.
I wanted to reflect this in the cover so created this concept where Williams drawings are strewn across the cover of some of his experiences throughout the story. The central image is of William, Tom and Sammy. This is in colour to emphasise them as the main characters.
