A Bugs Life: The Future of Food

  • Emmanuel Panayi

Whilst we look towards more sustainable solutions to our everyday lives in a current climate crisis, bugs wouldn't necessarily appeal to a change of diet. Simply put, insects are high in protein value, whilst being extremely efficient to produce - in comparison to meat-based proteins. Given that a bug-based diet is quite the regular in Eastern cultures, this project aims to explore the possibilities of bug-based dishes, presented in a whimsical/surreal environment. An enticing introduction aimed at Western cultures, if you wish. Each set piece has been designed and created by myself, taking inspiration from the harvesting sources of the bugs - surrounding environments, weather conditions, and times of day. Restaurants in London & New York City who serve bug-incorporated menu items have inspired each 'dish'.
