A Study In Growth

  • Shiyang He

My work focused on the visual and spiritual connection between decay and growth. And turn it into a kind ornament. 'When faced with decay, and the attendant connotations with death, we are forced to reassess what exactly we find aesthetically pleasing.'(Brownett et al., 2014) Decay is the outcome of the growing process, decay also can contribute to the growth. This project was divided into three parts which are Moss, Colours and Ink Study.

COLOURS:
Leaves grow from the dry branches. Flowers poking its head through the hard dirt. Spring breeze green the world again. Colours return to the world again. The poem above is the main idea of this part. After boiling by alcohol, plants but their colours have been kept more permanently.
MOSS:
The following pages are about the body of work. This is a self-initiated project. These photos on this page were taken from one of the most decaying part of mordern society-- Graveyard. Although this place full of dead people, the life was more thrive than the other place out of the graveyard. 'Moss' is more than the plant itself, it also represent the life thrive on decaying things.
INK STUDY:
The process of ink's diffusion in water can be regarded in two directions. One is that ink is decaying because of its mix with water; the other one is that ink is growing because of its combination with water.
