A Woman's Fate

  • Wendy Lee
A Woman’s Fate is an exploration of female identity through my personal experience growing up as a girl in a traditional Chinese family in Singapore. As Simone de Beauvoir, a French philosopher and writer, wrote ‘One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman’ (Beauvoir. S., 1997). In this way, feminine qualities are culturally defined, socially constructed and time-bound. With customs and traditions passed down through many family generations, expectations about my role as a woman have been ingrained into me from a young age. I grew up with my mother telling me that a woman’s job in life is to get married, bear children and serve her family. Although ultimately given the same opportunities as my brother, I have still personally experienced the Chinese saying, “zhong nan qing nu” (value the male, disdain the female). The stereotypical idea of womanhood is something I have struggled with all my life. This project offers an alternative discourse to the female stereotypes that still dominate society today, particularly in Chinese culture. Although women are now given more freedoms than before, they still experience inequality today. A Woman’s Fate attempts to question these social norms by exploring the various trajectories a woman’s life can take.
