To celebrate International Women’s Day, we’re putting the spotlight on some of the most inspiring women in the creative industries on The Dots.

Over the rest of the week, we’ll be highlighting their work, thoughts on what it means to them to be in the creative industries, their inspirations, aspirations, iconic role models and sage words of advice.

Next up, we have advice from Julie Seal, Creative Strategist at social giants Facebook and Instagram.
What does it mean to you to be female and in the creative industries?

It’s a point of pride that I might inspire others, but then also I have no idea what else I’d do as I LOVE my job passionately and still find it bonkers that I get paid to have ideas all day!

Do you have words of wisdom for other women looking to break into the industry?

Be nice. Hormones, idiots, egos, boys’ clubs, bad bosses and bitching can make us all feel annoyed, insecure and fed up, but try to be as nice as you possibly can be, particularly to the other women around you (even if they are being mean to you at the time – they might be going through all sorts of stuff). Not least because we need to build each other up, not bring each other down, but also when you mess up (and you will), it’s great to have some supportive women to help wipe your tears and buy you a gin.

Who is your all time female creative icon?

So many though not from advertising. Mainly funny female writers like Caroline Aherne, Tina Fey & Amy Poehler and Sharon Horgan. Though maybe now my all-time favourite is stand-up and writer Sara Pascoe.
