African Renaissance Night

  • Jeani Tamakloe
African Renaissance Night is an annual event planned and organized by the African Students Association (ASA) at Drake University. The main purpose of the event is to educate the Drake and Des Moines community on the rich culture of Africa. The event is held in March each academic year.
The event was organized and planned by the 6 members of the ASA Executive Council. I served as the Vice President for our 2012 event and the President in 2013. I was in charge of managing and delegating duties to the committee, driving achievement of milestones, budgeting, onsite coordination and decoration.
In 2012, African Renaissance Night attracted an attendance of about 230 guests, received nominations for Outstanding Diversity Program and was featured in the Times Delphic (Drake University Campus Newspaper)
In 2013, we attracted an attendance of about 300 and raised a donation for OrphanAid. We received nominations for Outstanding Diversity Program and Outstanding Student Organization . I was awarded with the Top Student Organization President award for the 2012/2013 academic year.
