Afro Bulgarian Liberal Nationalist

  • Viktor Kadiri

“Afro Bulgarian Liberal Nationalist” is an art project that aims to tackle the conservative and often racist ideas of monoculturalism. This project confronts the notion that a person needs to be of a certain color in order to be accepted as part of a nation's culture and identity and is aiming to promote multiculturalism. It is my stand against the ideas of racial purity and fixed identities embedded in almost all conservative societies. “Afro Bulgarian Liberal Nationalist” highlights the problems with rising homophobia and racism masked as a form of patriotism and nationalism by various political and non-political organizations in my country Bulgaria. This is a project aimed at those who are deliberately ignoring those problems and using them only for their own political or financial advantage. Afro Bulgarian Liberal Nationalist is my artistic answer to the questions - “Who are you? What are you? Where are you from?”. Questions I had to answer on a daily basis as a kid and quite often as an adult. With this project, I claim back my right to self-identity. A right, highjacked by the ignorance of those who felt that their “pure blood or race” gives them the authority to decide for me who am I and where I am from.
