Alan Powdrill - Ecuadorian Carnival

  • ALAN POWDRILL

On a recent trip to Ecuador, South America, Alan found himself in the middle of carnival season, traditionally celebrated in Catholic countries just before Lent. In the middle of the country is a town called Ambato famous for the “Fiesta de Frutas y Flores” (Festival of Fruits and Flowers). The festival was started after a major earthquake destroyed Ambato in 1949, to celebrate the resilience of the people and the land. Every February the town witnesses incredible displays of flower laden floats, dancing and celebrations held over 4 days. Rather than shooting typical carnival pictures, Alan chose to focus on portraits of the amazing characters in the parade. He managed to separate his chosen subjects from the huge crowds and shoot some stunning portraits of the incredible participants.
