An Ode To Potate Waffles

  • Beth Wilson

A newspaper with the sole aim to praise the underappreciated waffly, carby goodness that is potato waffles.

Brief: Create a design solution for something that you are passionate about,
and convince us of your point of view.
Concept: A light-hearted publication dedicated to potato waffles, convincing the reader
that they are in fact the best form of potato.
Solution: Targeted at students, An Ode To Potato Waffles explores the different delightful
attributes of the best (subjective) potato form, Potato Waffles.
Typeface
To supplement the publication, I created an typeface based of the potato
waffle grid and made it 3D to visualise the whole 3D nature
of the waffles.
Waffle grid
The publication grid is based of the potato waffle 4x5 grid, and the titles are also
arranged in a 4x5 format.
Colour Palette
The publications red and yellow duo tone colour palette is based off Birds Eye’s
potato waffl e packaging, arguably the most famous and best brand of potato
waffl e. Furthermore, Birds Eye is credited as the company that brought potato
waffl es into the mainstream.
Copy
The publication features light hearted, jokey copy that initially ‘waffles’ on,
written to entertain the reader and make them smile, consequently associating
positive feelings with potato waffles (ooo hypnosis).
Newsprint
Printed on newsprint to represent the cheap and cheerful nature of waffles.
End note
Continuing the brand and spreading the potato waffle love with this end note,
encouraging the use of the #odetoapotatowaffle hashtag. The publication also
features actual text messages from me or my friends relating to each of the
topics, continuing the colloquial light hearted copy and emphasising
the student audience.
