Artist Interview for BURST LDN - Aysia Wards

Interview of artist Aysia Wards for BURST LDN. Questions and transcribing by Joel Cameron Bailey. 2021. Video shot by Louiza (@artificially.blue) of BURST LDN. Available on @burst.ldn Instagram, via 'Guides'.

“I like to be raw and real when I’m writing because what I feel is what most people feel. It’s like no-one wants to talk about it, so if I can use my own experiences to help people feel less alone in what they are enduring or even thoughts and feelings they find hard putting into words that’s a complete win for me.”
Interviewed by Joel Cameron Bailey [ @joelcbailey ]

Music
An artist always has a decision to make when deciding whether to use their real name or an alias. To be an expression of themselves or a character in a world of their own creation. Why did you choose to use your real name?
So my name is Aysia Edwards, but I decided to go with Aysia Wards as I felt like Edwards was a bit of a mouthful and that Aysia Wards rolled off the tongue nicer & sounded better as an artist name. It really took me forever to decide on it. I’ve only told a few people this, but I like to think of Aysia Wards as my own little manifestation, because written as an @ its “Aysiawards". So I like to see it as Aysia Awards, like my own personal goals & rewards for the art I create, as I feel so accomplished and gifted when I listen to the final composition of my creation.

Manifestation seems like a helpful method of building energy, to then work and create from. What other methods do you have to generate positive energy?
On my days where I feel like things are a little too much for me or I feel clouded and blue there are a few different things I do to get myself back on track and I kid you not one of the things I find most helpful are having really deep in-depth conversations with myself (she says in the most sane way ever). I remind myself of all that has been set out to destroy me and my spirit and how I overcame those obstacles each time and how much stronger they made me. I listen to my songs to remind myself how talented and blessed I am to be able to create and use my voice to share my experiences with others. Speaking with friends and family is also my go to, I am lucky enough to have a really stable loving group of individual angels around me that support, nurture, never filter the truth from me and will always answer the phone. Other days I will get dressed look in the mirror remind myself that I am special, 1 of 1, irreplaceable and destined for things beyond my comprehension, then have a little dance around to some playlists. Grounding is also very important to me when it comes to shifting my mindset from negative to positive. I like to go for long walks with some incense and music and just sit by the water surrounded by trees and remind myself everything happens for me not to me, take some deep breathes and really believe with every inch of my being that things will get better and let that feeling run through my body.

It's interesting that your own music is such an important part of your routine. Do you feel artists should 'live' with their music in this way?
I think its only natural for artists & creators of all sorts to be their number one fan, because before the people that support your art there is only you. And if you don't hold it in high regard everyone else opinions can blur the faith you have in yourself. Do I feel they should make it an important part of their routine to use as reassurance of their talent and markers of progress? I do, most definitely, believe that. Because each time you do this its like it unlocks different areas of your creativity in terms of what else could work or new sounds you want to try out or how you could do something differently but have it still give the same affect.

In 2019 you released ‘More’, a sensual ballad depicting a deeply euphoric feeling of adoration for the person in the song. As a songwriter, how much do you draw from your own experiences in your work?
The majority of my songs are all from my personal experiences and emotions, I take pride in feeling everything so deeply so I try to portray that as much as I can in my music. I like to be raw and real when I'm writing because what I feel is what most people feel, but its like no-one wants to talk about it, so if I can use my own experiences to help people feel less alone in what they are enduring or even thoughts and feelings they find hard putting into words thats a complete win for me. I like to write poetry and short stories too, so I also use that skill to write songs from different perspectives. I like to place myself in shoes I haven't filled before, it keeps my mind fresh and optimistic. Writing frees and heals me so I can't imagine writing about something that doesn't trigger real human emotions in me, because then I can't expect it to do that to my supporters and if I don't make you feel something then I'm not doing it right, I'm not doing what I am meant to do.

On the subject of making the audience 'feel' your music, how would you describe your sound? How does that sound play a part in making the audience feel?
I have always found it very difficult to pin down a specific sound for myself and it has definitely changed over the years. If I was to give it a place I would say somewhere between Ambient Trap and Alternative R&B, maybe a bit ‘Lofi’ at times. I like there to be enough room on a track for me to fill the gaps with affective harmonies and ad-libs to build an atmosphere that resonates with the story I am telling. I would consider my music and sound to be very emotive; [using] drops, fading, sound affects and playing with different vocal techniques are important to me when building a track and especially when I'm trying to portray a certain type of emotion. For example, I have a song, from a dark period of time, where I decided enough was enough and it is accompanied by a bass line, a few drum kicks, heavy machinery and metal objects. I want my audience to feel whatever they feel when they listen to my art, I leave it open for interpretation. I don't mind what they take from it as long as when its done they say “damn, that one hit”.

You haven’t rushed to release new music since ‘More’, where some may have done during the pandemic. How important for you is the process of building and creating a sound, prior to releasing music?
If I'm being completely honest, I wanted to release in 2020 but as time went on I just wanted to start over, I didn't scrap all of my music I worked on for the past 4/5 years, but I did put it on hold as that just wasn't how I was feeling anymore. I've done a lot of growing in my personal life and in my music, so I felt that if I was to release anything, it should be material more compatible with where I'm at right now. So I've just been taking my time really, I enjoy the process so much and working on perfecting my craft, as I evolve so does the music. I adopted a new writing style and experimented with more sounds and topics I've always wanted to speak on. Through doing that I decided it wasn't my time to release yet because I just dived into a new lane with myself and I had to get comfortable there, which I can finally say I have done and its all mine. But I do really think it is so important to build and create your sound or even just that one thing you do that lets people know its you, so for me I had to find what that was and figure out how to imprint it on everything I did. I'm just making sure I have a stable foundation with what I'm doing so I can give you it all consistently and wholeheartedly.

Personal
To what extent has creating during the pandemic been a tool for your own personal growth? And how easy/difficult have you found that process?
I'd say it has been quite important mainly for my sanity, but there have been times it has been so difficult when looking for inspiration in the same four walls I’ve been seeing everyday. That being said, I was forced to search for inspiration in new ways internally instead of externally, which lead me down a whole bunch of different paths & unknown territories with myself but I found a lot of inspiration there. The way I started to articulate myself changed and the way I owned and voiced my opinions became stronger. In all honesty though, there were days where I felt so unmotivated to create even if I wanted to so badly I had so much on my mind that I wanted to write about, it all just became a blur and one thing I learnt from that is to never force it, it’s not coming now but it will come later and when it does it will be so much more powerful and beautiful than anything I could've done whilst caught in a whirlwind of emotions and thoughts. I did a lot of meditating and shadow work which always led me to writing even if it was just random scribbles. But overall, I would say it was difficult some days, easy on the others and the most crucial ingredient to my growth, within myself and the art because even just having things to look back on showed me how much I was achieving.

What does the word ‘home’ mean to you?
A few things. Home is where I lay my head but home is also where the love is, to me its more so a feeling than a place, [it’s] anywhere that makes me feel safe, secure and loved. My physical home is most definitely my sanctuary but my emotional home is within me, my loved ones, and nature specifically. [For example] water, grass and I do love a tree trunk, there is just something about palm to trunk connection that provides me with an overwhelming sensation of comfort and freedom.

Style and Creativity
You were featured in a Nike article on London street-style, and your choice of clothing appears to something you take great care in. What do you think your wardrobe says about who you are?
I think it’s my being [a] water sign that gives off that sense of mysticism in me to delve and explore the different areas of my personality through clothing and self expression. I dress how I feel on the day, I love accessories and the small details that add to an outfit. I use to only wear skinny jeans and a colour scheme of white, black, blue and grey in hopes I would just blend in, but blending in is not what felt right to me so, as I got older, colours, prints, patterns and textures started screaming at me and catching my sight at every turn. I feel like I go through so many different versions of myself on a daily basis, so many moods, and I love that clothes allow me to express how I am feeling without having to use words. *Hmm* what does it say about me though? I think it says “I wear what I want because this is my world and I am free to be whatever version of myself I choose to be that day, a colourful beautiful mess put together with intention.” I mean hey, if I don't wear it someone else will right?

Too right! Something else that is clear about you is that you use your social media to promote fellow artists. How much do you value working with other artists to push each other forward?
It’s all about the movement, there will always be someone next to me that I think [is] amazingly talented and deserves recognition. I am so happy with my time on this planet so far and I want everyone else to be as well, sharing and promoting doesn't cost a single penny and can make such a drastic change to someones life. I also have so many friends that create! I have friends that make clothes, music, digital art, friends that are dancers, actors, painters, photographers/videographers and make home accessories and I am so very proud of them daily. And being able to hit the share button just feels like the bare minimum, sometimes I wish I could do even more than that, words of encouragement are even more important to me because everyone wants to feel seen and appreciated for what they do and create,  I think that sometimes people forget how much work goes into creating and bringing ideas to life so in my eyes we all deserve to be seen and heard.

Future
That movement you speak of is made up of a lot of female artists. What does femininity look like, to you, in 2021?
Femininity in 2021 to me looks like women living unapologetically as their truest selves, without the worries of societies unconventional standards of how we must act, look, speak, dress and think. To me, it looks like more sisterhood union and watering each others seeds. It looks like more conversations of building and supporting each other, pushing each other to stand firm in what we believe in, and to continue to inspire one another and adjust a crown if it slips a little.

On that note, is there a female artist that you aspire to be like?
There are a few female artists that have done some undeniably amazing things for me through their music that I only hope I will be able to do for the people that listen to mine. From the way they sing, to the way they structure their songs, to all the little bits they add underneath a track to build it in the most subtle ways. If I had to pick one it would be impossible! So I’ll give you two names, and they are Sade & Jhené Aiko. I think musically they are both so magical and unique in what they do, their writing, as individuals I would describe [them] as rare diamonds. I love the honesty and vulnerability they share and the different sides of their experiences so, if I had to pick, I would say they are who I would aspire to be like. Nothing would make me happier than to do for my listeners what they do for me because they have saved, guided and soothed me numerous times.

Magical names indeed! Finally, what can we expect to see from Aysia Wards this year?
This year you can expect some new music, more poetry & spoken word pieces on my word page @aysiawards on Instagram and, if all is well, some gigs!

Grounding is also very important to me when it comes to shifting my mindset from negative to positive. I like to go for long walks with some incense and music and just sit by the water surrounded by trees and remind myself everything happens for me not to me, take some deep breathes and really believe with every inch of my being that things will get better and let that feeling run through my body.\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"5kmd8\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"19k57\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"It's interesting that your own music is such an important part of your routine. I like to place myself in shoes I haven't filled before, it keeps my mind fresh and optimistic. Writing frees and heals me so I can't imagine writing about something that doesn't trigger real human emotions in me, because then I can't expect it to do that to my supporters and if I don't make you feel something then I'm not doing it right, I'm not doing what I am meant to do.\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"ctckt\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"3paa3\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"On the subject of making the audience 'feel' your music, how would you describe your sound? I don't mind what they take from it as long as when its done they say “damn, that one hit”.\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"903m0\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"\\\",\\\"type\\\":\\\"unstyled\\\",\\\"depth\\\":0,\\\"inlineStyleRanges\\\":[],\\\"entityRanges\\\":[],\\\"data\\\":{}},{\\\"key\\\":\\\"3l39s\\\",\\\"text\\\":\\\"You haven’t rushed to release new music since ‘More’, where some may have done during the pandemic.
