Assisted Dying — The Project

  • Sam Mularczyk

This animation was created to mark the day that voluntary assisted dying became available to terminally ill patients in Victoria. As the first state to enact this scheme, it naturally raised concerns from the average Australia about a patient’s safety and security. It was important to explain the strict criteria assessed by doctors in an engaging and respectful way. Medical stories with realistic graphics can be useful, but in this case, such an approach could be off putting. A story like this can be hard for some to digest, so instead of going for something realistic, I wanted to bring a softness and approachability to this story. This piece was entirely animated in 3D software, with a hand-drawn treatment layered on top to add a human touch. I used light, soft colours, and simple clear typography to make sure each section could be clearly understood. Each piece of criteria had its own visual metaphor, drawn as simply as possible, and was story-boarded in a way that each piece of criteria would flow from one to the next. Designed and animated in a few days for The Project on Network Ten. The Project is an award-winning news and current affairs show. Broadcasting right around Australia, it delivers a daily wrapup of all the stories Australia needs to know.
