Hello Charlie created VFX for David Attenborough’s latest ground-breaking BBC Natural History documentary 'Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur' in which David investigates the discovery of an enormous new species of dinosaur.
Working closely with some of the worlds leading palaeontologists and zoologists we created a working anatomical CGI model of the long extinct dinosaur and largest creature to have walked the Earth; a Titanosaur. Having travelled with the production to the location of the discovery in a remote region of Patagonia, Hello Charlie directed the filming of the FX sequences with David Attenborough. Then, each element of the dinosaur anatomy was sculpted, animated and composited into the specially shot sequences.
The graphic aesthetic of the anatomical sequences developed from the principle concept of presenting the dinosaur in an ethereal form, like a stylised apparition. We are opening a portal to the past, summoning its presence to reveal its secrets. This solution blends the essential components of the film; the forensic, reconstructive journey of piecing together the skeleton, from the initial discovery and excavation, to the final exhibition, and representing the sheer scale and dramatic majesty of the largest creature to have walked the earth - all with the unique, authoritative presence of David Attenborough.
The creation of these graphics was a huge undertaking and a big responsibility, and we are delighted to have played a part in the telling of such an incredible story.
We have also had in the UK ratings, and across its premiere and repeat, Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur reached a cumulative audience of 12.8million viewers / 21.7 % of the population.
