AUSTRALIAN SOUVENIRS

  • Jodie Allen

This project was based around the book ‘Australian Popular Culture’ and all the joys of Australia as a whole. The research was broad from the worlds deadliest animals, theme parks to barbeques. However, everything stopped when I came across Dame Edna Everage (A character played by Barry Humphries an Australian comedian) instantly inspired by her tacky yet glamorous look, this was where the project was headed. So I combined some of Australia’s most deadly animals but made them kitsch! The combination of laser cutting and gems demonstrated this perfectly. But I still wanted to make things a little more ‘graphic designy’. That’s when I came up with the idea of a set of souvenirs of which I could incorporate postcards and designed backing cards for my items! What better way to make people instantly think of Australia than using some of their funny slang?
