InHouse Records is the world’s first non-profit fully functioning record label to operate inside and outside of UK prisons. The aim of the label is to create safe and enabling environments for individuals to better their technical and social skills through music. In the UK as a result of the pandemic c86,000 prisoners, like the rest of the population, are on lockdown. However, lockdown for the prison populace means remaining in their cell for almost 24 hours a day. As we weren’t allowed inside the prisons anymore we came up with the idea of creating a weekly magazine to help alleviate anxiety and to distract frustrations that may result in potential rioting when the cell doors are eventually opened. The magazine dedicates different weeks to different genres and artists. As creative director and designer I spend time researching the surrounding ephemera of the artist and genre in the form of album covers, posters, tickets and even fashion trends of the time. It is now reaching over 2,500 prisoners across the UK & USA through nine separate prisons and correctional facilities.
