We would like to invite you to an open air exhibition of ONE artwork titled BEYOND C, created by Saskia Rodriguez as a result of her residency at ONE Project. The exhibit will take place on the last day of February! ADDRESS: UNIT 2C Uplands business park E175QJ (next to Exale brewing) About the exhibition: 'We must learn to see more, to hear more, to feel more’ Susan Sontag, 1960 During her ONE Project Residency at Walthamstow, Saskia Rodriguez has been working with ideas related to language and communication. Rodriguez aims to generate a constant doubt of what she considers the core of our visual culture; the reproduction of the image and the confusion that this generates in ourselves in consequence of over-information. She is a markmaker who raises questions about how credibility and truth values are built into our society. Although documenting urban spaces and her perception of the city or common spaces is an ongoing project (@streetartviewing), this is the first time Rodriguez makes a specific street art object herself. Ideas and text had been used concerning the fact of how we receive and comprehend images and messages. Using Sontag's essay, Against interpretation, as a text reference, she has created all the images that are part of the installation. Therefore, during the residency she has been working with sensibility, language, and lies concepts. She has used Sontag’s text to transform the symbols that we understand as letters for unintelligible whole instead. The interpretation of this piece, should not take the place of the experience, therefore, we propose to have an open air happening instead of a conventional exhibition. As members of the audience we are all the time surrounded by images and adverts; this installation is like a paradox or even a joke in the public space used to share information instead of experiences. It is a proposal of a billboard that we can find in our everyday life, full of strokes, traces or scraps of papers, and as usual, we are not able to read nor to understand what is meant to be said. An individual work that, as ONE Project proposes, helps us to focus our experience within the show; attempts to focus on not feeling indifferent towards an image, sensitizing the audience to a different way of living an exhibition. They believe in the idea of a gallery as an experience rather than just a place. The main aim of the project is to focus the audience’s attention on ONE work of art, and encourage contemplation, building a deeper relationship between the artwork and the audience and some new ways of seeing. It is easy to be indifferent when confronted with 100 art forms at once, but it is equally difficult to stay impassive when presented with just one.
