BIG BLUE IPA

  • Holly Aldridge-Ball

Shortlisted for the JDO Raw Competition ‘Mash Made In Heaven’. A playful new IPA beer designed for millennials to inspire a taste for wanderlust.

This product was designed in response to the competition brief set by JDO Raw, a London and New York based design agency. The brief was to “Design a new food or drink brand for millennials but with a difference”.
JDO Raw asked us to use a random word generator to produce a combination of two different food items, products or flavours - this was used as the starting point for us to design our brand concepts.
The two food combinations I received were the ice-cream flavoured Blue Java bananas and IPA. After doing my preliminary research on this combination, I was intrigued by the diversity of locations where the Blue Java bananas grew. I thought the variety of exotic locations would be perfect springboard to develop an exciting brand story.

Because of the fruit’s exotic locations, the design takes inspiration from the early days of commercial travel. A time when travelling abroad became more attainable and widely advertised, with the possibility and excitement of a new discovery. This is ultimately what the brand encompasses with its bright and enticing designs.
The label design mimics the look of vintage postcards with their central design and vibrant boarder.
The name “Big Blue IPA” references both the Blue Java name and the colour of the sea around the islands where they come from.
There is a variety of 3 designs as this fruit grows in a variety of different countries. The cans are designed to inspire wanderlust in the consumer and bring a splash of summer no matter where you are.
