Big Man

These days, bodybuilding is more than just a sport—it’s a subculture with a large and diverse membership, complete with its own unique set of rules, norms, and values. This subculture is deeply intertwined with social networks, which serve as platforms for self-expression and, often, for showcasing physical achievements. I’ve found it fascinating to explore the relationships and unspoken rules within this subculture, which offer new ways of understanding concepts like masculinity and beauty. As part of my research, I joined a bodybuilding club and used my camera as a tool for sociological exploration. This collection is based on my observations, where I identified the norms and rules that shape the world of bodybuilding. The focus of this project is Hossein, a professional bodybuilder who runs his own gym and also works as an instructor. After a few years away from competition, he decided to enter again. However, the journey was challenging, as he was not in peak condition and struggled with body fat. I followed Hossein for over two years, documenting his progress as he prepared for the competition and beyond. To truly understand Hossein’s journey, I immersed myself in his world, following him from his home to the competition platform. I captured his transformation in two series. The first part of the series documents his preparation for the competition, which he also began sharing on social media. I chose to use a film camera for this project, opting for black-and-white negatives that I could process myself. Black-and-white film was more accessible and allowed me to focus on the raw emotions and stark realities of his journey. Here, I present a selection of photos from the first part of the project, offering a glimpse into Hossein’s transformation and the broader culture of bodybuilding.
