A close friend, collaborator and muse of mine asked me to design a look for their birthday. Their requests included: historical references, a reveal, colour and print and shape. All ideas I use naturally. I started by looking at 19th century pelisses and victorian promenade jackets as well as a curved 'm' shape trouser cut detail. My idea was to create an pelisse style overcoat to hide the reveal underneath. I used colour and print as part of the reveal. The overcoat is a black and white brocade and hiding underneath an explosion of colour in the skirt made from 6 saris (20m of fabric). The shape for the skirt came from the shape of Marie Antoinette's famously wide skirts. I wanted to mimic the shape created by panniers and did so by creating an abundance of ruffles that sat at the wearers hips - expanding their silhouette outwardly.
