Black and White East London

  • Megan Hackett

I set myself the challenge to go out using my DSLR camera and only shooting in black and white and not allowing myself to edit the photos after; I wanted them to be 100% real. I love East London and the quirky vibe it has, which made this project a really fun one to try.

Taking photos in this spot is always good fun. If you wait and time it right you can photograph cyclists waiting on the red light to turn green and continue with their day with the "sushi samba" sign in the background.
This was a really lovely moment to capture. The man with his back towards the camera was lost and had asked the man on his bike to help him. He happily pulled out his phone and told him the directions he needed to hear and then was on his way.
Bricklane is an interesting place to take pictures. It is such a well known street and yet doesn't feel well known. From the run down buildings to the graffiti, but that's what gives it character and life. It wouldn't be brick lane without it.
I captured a photo of this man because he was just relaxing and enjoying his day. No stress or running around like everyone else in London, he just stopped and took time for himself.
This photo feels like it captures the true spirit of the East End. It is run down in some parts but the community spirit is always there and I love it so much.
