‘BLACK INFINITY’ is the second collection made by Studio Mapalo. The collection comprises six looks made up of gender neutral upcycled 1 of 1 garments. The idea behind the collection was to showcase the modern black experience by taking elements of traditional african culture and elevating them using British ultra modern fabrication and silhouette . The ultimate goal was to strip back the conventional ideas of what African clothing has always been and show Studio Mapalo’s vision of what it could look like. Using a mixture of sportswear, utility wear and formal wear the garments’ narrative flows between a tribal rawness and slick modern refinement to show a visual contrast of how style from two opposing cultures have combined to form the brands unique aesthetic. The themes of the project were driven by the idea of a scenario in which ‘Village’ Africa was at the forefront of World fashion. The Artistic vision was to create a series of garments that would blend seamlessly into both rural Africa and western metropolis. All garments were constructed using upcycled or deadstock fabric. The following images were taken in Zambia.
