Black Star Season

  • Liz Chege

As part of curating collective Come the Revolution, I was one of the curators of a two-month UK-wide celebration of the range, versatility and power of Black actors taking place in venues across Bristol. The film season is dedicated to some of the most magnetic performances ever to grace the cinema screen. To promote the films, I produced a variety of social media and digital content to highlight key moments. In keeping with Bristol's graffiti heritage, we worked with local PR practitioners to create a mural in memory of Prince to promote the centrepiece of our contribution to Black Star season, a screening of "Purple Rain "as the ‘Jam of the Year’ at the Colston Hall (November 13, 2016). We invited Norman Jay MBE to host the screening's after-party. The mural and event gained national coverage in the Guardian's photo of the day. #BFIBlackstar

The programme aimed to target under-represented audiences from the Black & Minority Ethnic community with additional targets to approach other under-served audience groups (including age, disability and sexual orientation) in supplementary strands. This was a UK wide programme with over 80% of the programme taking place outside central London.
We created an immersive experience for audience by curating special playlists, hosting Q&A sessions, produced materials for the audiences to interact with and took over an entire concert hall for the Purple Rain special screening.
