Boardies competition entry

  • Beth Taylor

The approach Beth has decided to take to the brief is to look at a combination of plant and sea life and portray how they respond in their natural untouched environment. Beth has gained initial imagery from her own first hand photographs and emotional impact the subject matter has on her. She has then continued gaining design inspiration and colour palettes from trend and market research to make her designs commercially viable whilst creating original designs that are all hand drawn. With a huge part of the Boardies brand values focusing on striving to become more sustainable with a high awareness of the impact the fashion industry is having on the planet the motif's chosen are also a way to highlight the importance of these values throughout the whole design process and to a consumer. It's important to show that designs don’t have to compromise being fun and engaging to be sustainable. Boardies creates designs that are fun and create emotion through the graphics, which is something Beth wanted to work with whilst also bringing her own personal emotional responses through detailed and experimental drawings. The bright colours paired with darker backgrounds and mark making are bold to draw attention to the hidden unique beauty that makes up ocean life and why we need to protect it. Some imagery taken for inspiration is not my own. All artwork is original and my own. Visualisation imagery is not my own.
