I had been hired by the author Renata Formoso, Noah's mum, to create the layout for the book The Fizzy Brain written by him. The book is about ADHD, where Noah – with a little help from his mum – explains how he feels about having it, that he calls having a Fizzy Brain!
It was wonderful to be a part of such an important project, being myself diagnosed and treating mental health issues for a couple of years. Not to mention how important it is to discuss these topics with children, so I was super excited.
In the initial stages of the project, Renata and I had a lot of conversations about how she wanted the letters to look like, but yet, we were still trying to reach the result expected with different typefaces.
After a few more discussions, we had the idea of emulating Noah's letter, to give it an even more personal touch to the book.
We met together with an iPad, and Noah draw a lot of repeated letters that would later help me understand his calligraphy – different ways he does a specific letter, how in some letters he can pass the pencil more than once, giving it a bolder stroke, the non-straight lines, etc.
All super important findings that would be later reproduced when I draw the letters for the book text.
With the letter style approved, we then moved on to the layout of the entire book.
We had a lot of fun on that workday, and I got back home with a lot of nice artwork from Noah on my iPad, I loved it! Thanks for this important work and thanks Rê for trusting in my work. It was amazing working with you!
