Client Otto Tiles & Design are a provider of handmade, bespoke Turkish tiles, based in Istanbul, Zurich and London. They aim to create amazing aesthetics with unique designs and patterns, and to be a bridge between Turkish and Anatolian art and the West. Using their strong connections with artisans and craftsmen in Turkey, they provide beautiful handcrafted tiling made using authentic, ancient techniques to people all over the world. Objective To develop and design a book of samples to allow them to share and promote their tiles, showcasing their work and attracting new business. Solution The brand identity of Otto Tiles and Design focuses strongly on heritage, the handmade nature of the tiles, the craftsmanship that goes into them, and the overall aesthetics and beauty of the finished products. Our aim was to capture this identity and produce something that was strongly complementary to the Turkish tiles themselves, that emphasised the history, heritage and traditions behind the work, and that promoted the tiles as beautiful items in their own right. We created a clean, clear and stylish sample book, working with a brochure style. We used the tiles themselves as a base for the design, to showcase the work itself more prominently, and to demonstrate the inherent beauty and style of the products. The design had to incorporate practical considerations as well as aesthetic ones, as the samples themselves require support and structure, and needed to be displayed in the best possible fashion. We chose a three-page foldout design, and used hard-wearing, stiff card to display the samples prominently and effectively, and allow the fullest promotion of the products.
