Shelter is a registered charity that helps millions of people struggling with homelessness every year. One of their income streams is through the re-selling of unwanted items from their charity shops across the UK. Donations often include second hand clothing, books, one-off vintage items, media and bric-a-brac. Their new retail shop in Coal Drops Yard, King’s Cross promises to put a spotlight on Shelter’s work with vulnerable communities, and their ability to make something great out of the discarded. Through our concept ‘modern salvage’ we were able to reuse scrap materials from the Coal Drops Yard development to create a new floor, raised platforms, shelving, light fittings and rails. Paired with large media walls showing footage of Shelter’s activism work and detailing their core values, the project promises to raise the bar on what a charity shop could be. This is a dream project for HemingwayDesign as it assimilates social benefit, re-purposing and thrift, all in an incredible location.
