Box

In the more recent stage of “BOX,” the charcoal work moved into 3D. I began responding to its multiple surfaces; applying the charcoal along the ridges of its corrugation; feeling out its perfections and imperfections; blending it in to reveal a new object that almost looked burned or very old; and then creating the highlights to reveal a person and their shoulders, arms, and hands. In fact, this could have been a perfect mirror of the person who had assembled this box for me. The process may have been centering around an understanding of this box and how it got to me. As shown in these work samples, these iterative processes of drawing and building can blend materials and encapsulate stories and memories.
