Brum Youth Trends 2019

  • Daljinder Johal

Expert contributor to Brum Youth Trends report and part of Brum Youth Trends photoshoot. Brum Youth Trends is a pioneering flagship report for the city giving unprecedented insight on what young people think, want and need. Think about how much this city has changed over the last 5 years - before any of these major decisions happen there are discussions, panels and talks but very few young people are involved. Brum Youth Trends gives young people the power to make a difference. We amplify the voices of young people by sharing their opinions, thoughts and insights captured through our annual survey and turn it all in to action by feeding it back to the policy makers, organisations and people that can do something about it. Let's influence the city to make it a better place that reflects the wants and needs of young people.

Excerpt from Daljinder Johal:

IS (MY) CULTURE CENTRAL?

“For me, there’s one major sentiment that unpins this all - a lack of belonging. It’s important to consider why 33.2% of young people didn’t want to be part of Birmingham’s creative community despite 60.8% having said the arts are important.

I’ve found the arts industry exclusionary because of these seemingly narrow definitions. Do you belong to a creative community if you don’t have a creative practice? Do you have to be a full-time artist or what if you’re a STEM student with an interest in the arts? What if you don’t speak the ‘language’ of the arts? ”
